1 Acre in Square Feet — Exact Value & Chart
By BhumiMeter Editorial · 15 March 2026 · Updated 31 May 2026
Why acre matters in Indian land deals
Acre appears on sale deeds, Khasra extracts, Bhulekh PDFs, and NABARD crop-loan papers. When a farmer says "do acre zameen" or a developer buys "5 acres along the highway," the square-foot equivalent is always multiples of 43,560. Urban buyers rarely hear "acre" in city apartment projects, but peri-urban plots, farmhouse colonies, and industrial sheds outside municipal limits are still traded in acres. Converting to square feet lets you compare a ₹45 lakh/acre farm quote with a ₹3,200/sq ft plotted-development rate.
Do not confuse acre with Bigha. One acre might equal roughly 1.6 Pucca Bigha in Rajasthan or a different Bigha fraction in Bihar — because Bigha is regional. Acre itself never changes. If a deed lists both acre and Bigha and the math disagrees, trust the acre-to-sq-ft chain first, then verify the Bigha variant name with the patwari.
Acre to square feet formula
Square feet = Acres × 43,560. Reverse: Acres = Square feet ÷ 43,560. BhumiMeter uses the exact constant from our units database — not rounded "43,560" typed by hand in spreadsheets, so large land parcels stay precise through hectare and square-metre conversions.

Worked example: ₹ per acre vs ₹ per sq ft
A seller quotes ₹80 lakh per acre near Indore. Convert: 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft → ₹80,00,000 ÷ 43560 ≈ ₹1,836/sq ft before negotiation costs. Compare that to a nearby plotted scheme at ₹2,400/sq ft to see whether the agricultural conversion premium is justified. Always subtract road set-offs and non-saleable gair mumkin land before using headline acre area.
Typical plot shapes for 1 acre
One acre is 43,560 sq ft regardless of shape. Common rectangles: 66 ft × 660 ft (classic "gunter's chain" layout), 208.71 ft × 208.71 ft (near square), or 100 ft × 435.6 ft. Irregular survey boundaries are normal — the acre total comes from the licensed surveyor's plan, not from assuming a perfect rectangle. See our acre plot dimensions guide for length–width tables.
Checklist before paying token
- Match deed acreage with Bhulekh / RoR area in hectares or sq m, then convert with BhumiMeter.
- Confirm whether the acre includes khalihan, nadi, or shared path — net saleable area may be smaller.
- Convert to sq ft for stamp duty circles that assess on square feet in urban fringe zones.
- Cross-check bank valuation: lenders often haircut irregular shapes or landlocked parcels.
