Square Feet to Square Meter — Formula & Calculator
By BhumiMeter Editorial · 10 February 2026 · Updated 31 May 2026
Why sq ft and sq m both matter in India
The Legal Metrology Act and state revenue departments treat the square metre as the standard legal unit for area in many registrations and stamp-duty schedules. Real-estate marketing, by contrast, still leads with square feet in most tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and with "Gaj" (square yard) in parts of the North. A buyer who understands only one system can misread a loan sanction letter or compare a Bengaluru ₹/sq ft quote with a Mumbai ₹/sq m RERA sheet incorrectly.
Conversion is purely mathematical for these fixed units — unlike Bigha, no state toggle is required. The exact factor is embedded in our data: 1 sq ft = 1 (base), 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft equivalent. Use the table below for quick reference, then the live tool for your exact plot size.
Square feet to square metre formula
Square metres = square feet × 0.092903. Example: a 1,000 sq ft flat = 92.9031 m² carpet. Reverse: sq ft = sq m × 10.7639. For acres and hectares on agricultural land, convert to sq ft first, then to m² — or use the converter with acre/hectare units directly.

RERA, carpet area, and common mistakes
- RERA carpet is not the same as super built-up or plinth — convert only the area type listed in the agreement.
- Do not use international "foot" vs "survey foot" confusion; Indian market sq ft follows the standard 1 ft = 12 in chain used in our engine.
- NRI sellers reporting area to foreign banks need m²; multiply deed sq ft by the factor above, not 0.09 from memory.
- Agricultural land in Bigha must be converted to sq ft with the correct state Bigha before m² — see Bigha guide.
Linking sq m to traditional units
One cent (435.6 sq ft) equals 40.4686 m². One guntha (1,089 sq ft) equals 101.1715 m². These bridges help when a Kerala broker quotes cents but your architect draws m². Full regional context lives in the India land units pillar.

Stamp duty circles sometimes round area to whole metres; sub-registrar offices may re-survey disputed plots. BhumiMeter gives precise conversion math — not a substitute for your sale deed, architect's plan, or government extract. If deed sq ft and converted m² disagree with Bhulekh, resolve with the revenue office before registration.
